Let’s Be Real

– Wednesday Week 21 in Ordinary Time –

“For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful but inside are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth.” [Matthew 23:27]

Jesus certainly isn’t mincing words with this one! White on the outside and full of decay on the inside!

In these days of fake news and airbrushing of photos and InInstagram-perfectife stories and “reality” TV, it isn’t hard to recognise that this is certainly topical in the 21st century. It is easy to pick out the obvious culprits, seemingly writ large, but there is a smaller scale insidiousness that each of us may find if we take time for introspection.

Do my words say one thing, but my thoughts and opinions portray something much less like Jesus? Do I follow through on what I say I will do? Do I look out for the little person, or just seek the company of the influential and the popular? Do I look for the limelight and the attention, or do I seek God’s kingdom behind the scenes?

Jesus asks us to be authentic. Let your yes be a yes. (Matthew 5:37) He never said it was glamorous or fun. There are no promises of greatness on earth. Our reward will be in heaven. Let us accept our call to be a disciple and make the hard decision to stick with it, every day, committing to be Jesus’ hands on earth. Not for the fame, or the popularity, or the “likes” but because Jesus asked us to.
