Sent With Faith

– Memorial of St Vincent de Paul

“They departed and went through the villages bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere.” [Luke 9:6]

Today’s Gospel sees the disciples sent out to declare the good news of Jesus and bear fruit for the kingdom. The disciples are instructed, “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt” (v 3).   They are sent out with only faith, a faith that trusts in God to provide and to lead them forward.

We, too, are called to be disciples, to live as the hands and feet of Jesus, sent out with only faith, trusting that we are led. Faith begins in prayer and a relationship with God, but it doesn’t stop there. Faith sends us out in love. It is about living and proclaiming the Gospel. It leads us to help a friend or family member in need, volunteer at a hospital, or show kindness to someone in need. Our faith is to be offered and leads us to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Today is also the memorial of St. Vincent De Paul, a saint who exemplified living faith and sharing the good news with the poor. He preached the Gospel, lived it and put it into action. He continued Jesus’ mission, making God’s love a reality in the lives of the poor, sick and downtrodden.

Let us ponder our faith, trusting that we are to go into all the world to share the Gospel with those God puts in our lives. Let us allow St Vincent De Paul to inspire us and give us courage to respond in faith.

St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us!
