The Reckless Sower

– Wednesday 16th Week in Ordinary Time –

“Listen! A sower went out to sow.” [Matthew 13:3]

When you read today’s Gospel did you think about the seed and the soil or did you think about the sower?

In the past I’ve been drawn to reflect on the soil. I asked questions like, how am I being receptive to the Word of God? Am I ‘good soil’? But this time I was captured by the image of the sower and what this parable tells me about God.

Today we hear the story of a sower who scatters their livelihood with what I think we could term ‘reckless abandon’. Surely, no farmer would actually scatter their seed without first checking the soil to ensure that there is a good chance that growth will come? Then, after checking the soil, the sower would intentionally avoid that soil which is unlikely to yield growth? Yet, that is exactly what the sower in today’s parable does not do. The sower scatters and allows the seed to fall on all kinds of inhospitable soil.

Creation reveals to us a God who is meticulous and intentional and yet, the Parable of the Sower paints a picture of a God who is also incredibly, perhaps even recklessly, generous with his word and with chances to receive it, scattering opportunities for his children to meet him and know him more.

Today, let us be attentive to the generous nature of God and look out for every moment he presents for us to receive him and his word.
