Are You Ready?

– Wednesday 29th Week in Ordinary Time –

“But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour”  [Luke 12:30-40]

A few times as a Seminarian as I have been doing things around the church like setting up for mass, returning something to the sacristy, or visiting the chapel for prayer and have walked straight in and started doing my tasks. Moments later when I am settled or have completely finished my tasks, I look up and notice that Jesus is present. He was there exposed in adoration and I was completely unaware. Everything that I was doing, thinking, feeling… was done in plain sight of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When this happens to me I often find myself reflecting on what I was doing or thinking while Jesus was exposed and we were together during that intimate time together. What did Jesus find me doing? The Son of Man certainly came at an unexpected hour.

In today’s reading, Jesus is finishing the second of three parables in this discourse with the disciples. Essentially Jesus is saying “look guys, if you knew when your house was going to be broken into then you would be there to prevent it. You would have your mates there all armed and ready for whatever happens.” With foreknowledge of the thief coming, we would act differently.

What Jesus is asking of us today is that we don’t act differently. He is asking that we be so deeply in love with Him that our lives are one constant act of love. How can you make your life more loving and prayerful, not just at Sunday Mass and personal prayer times, but all day, every day?
