The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus healing the sick – the woman who touches his garment; the leper whose skin is cleansed; the lame man who stands and walks – all healed in just a moment with Jesus. Today’s Gospel is another story of healing, but this one is different.
Firstly, Jesus leads the blind man out of the city. What a walk that must have been for the man, through the busy streets wondering ‘what is Jesus doing?’ And, when they finally get there, Jesus puts spittle on his eyes and begins a conversation. ‘Can you see anything?’ says Jesus, ‘I can see people but they look like trees to me, but they are walking about’, replies the man. At last, Jesus lays his hand on the man’s eyes and he is cured completely.
Perhaps, like me, there are things in your life that need the healing touch of God – illness, pain or addiction; wounds from broken relationships; or the loss of a loved one? It’s tempting to pray that our story will be more like the woman who touched Jesus’ garment, but today we’re reminded that sometimes God takes his time and invites us to do the same.
Today, like the blind man, let God take you by the hand and lead you to a quiet place. Have an open heart and mind – talk with him – and allow him to work in your life in all the places that need his healing touch. Just give God time.
