Little by little, and bit by bit we learn; our minds constantly observing and applying lessons learnt from both nature and those around us. When we meet someone for the first time we don’t automatically know them and their story in depth, just like when we go somewhere new for the first time it isn’t an instant understanding of the history and workings of the space – these things take time and effort.
God knows us completely, and at no stage were we a distant concept – but when Jesus came and walked amongst us He met us as both divine and human, He enters into a personal relationship with those He walks with – He built trust and slowly but surely invited them deeper into the wonder and mystery of who He is. Jesus is still inviting us deeper. He says to us “I still have many things to say to you” Through the Sacraments, prayer and the gift of the Holy Spirit we are able to come to know God more deeply, we begin to understand His heart and His plan for us.
In this gospel Jesus is encouraging His disciples that His relationship with them will only be strengthened when He leaves them because they will have the Advocate with them, “when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” This encouragement is the same now as it was all those centuries ago, through time and effort we can continue to grow in understanding and relationship, as we wait for Pentecost let us pray that the Holy Spirit would open our eyes anew, so that day by day we would allow ourselves to be guided in truth, deepening and strengthening our relationship with Jesus.
