How Can This Be?

– Tuesday Week 2 of Easter –

“You must be born from above” [John 3:7]

In today’s gospel we find Nicodemus grappling with the words of Jesus. Nicodemus is not the first person in scripture to struggle to understand “How can these things be?” (John 3:9). Mary the mother of Jesus, asked the very same question of the angel at the Annunciation (Luke 1:34).

Jesus gives Nicodemus the answer, “You must be born from above”. In other words, the path to understanding the ways of God begins with receiving the Holy Spirit in Baptism and continues with us being constantly open to the action of the Holy Spirit. When we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, we no longer need to come before the Lord in the dark of night (as Nicodemus has done) but we can approach our heavenly Father with the dignity of being His adopted children.

As people who seek to be open to responding to God and obedient to His will, let us always begin praying the great prayer of the church ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’ – Come Holy Spirit.
