The Death of Jesus

– Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed –

Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. … Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!” (Mark 15:37, 39)

In this gospel, we read about our Lord feeling abandoned and questioning his Father – “why have you forsaken me?” – and of someone wanting to see evidence of God’s intervention to save his son – “let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”  It is quite easy to be distracted by words in this section of the gospel when the most compelling event in our Christian history occurs with the death of Jesus: “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.”  This one sentence articulates the great yet humble sacrifice he made for humankind – in our past, present day and future.  When he breathed his last breath he abandoned his life to save us as the ultimate sacrifice.  Regardless of the challenges in my life, knowing that Jesus has my back leaves me humble with gratitude.
