Taking Stock

– Tuesday Week 34 in Ordinary Time –

Beware that you are not led astray, for many will come in my name and say ‘I am he!’ and ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. ” [Luke 21:8]

I think we are all familiar with the picture of a person standing on a street corner wearing a sandwich board with the words “the end of the world is nigh”.   The truth is, they are right, but how soon?

In this reading Jesus tells us that there are all kinds of precursors to the end of the world, and we have already seen many examples of all of them.  And across the years there have been several people who believe that they know the specific date, but that day comes and goes, and nothing happens!

What is our response to all of this “end of the world” talk?

We can dismiss it all as silly. The truth is no none knows the day nor the hour.  But what if we take it as a reminder to do a stocktake of our lives?  If Jesus were to come back tomorrow?  Would I be happy with that possibility, or regretful with some of my choices?  Am I spending my time furthering the kingdom?  Am I spending time with Jesus in prayer?  Am I kind? Generous? Forgiving?

Let us take this reminder to have our own house in order, because, the end of the world is nigh.
