Invited to be Brothers and Sisters of Jesus

– Memorial of St Francis de Sales –

“He replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’”  [Mark 3:33]

Every time I read this scripture, my initial thought is – is Jesus abandoning his mother and brothers to go help others? That just couldn’t be true as Mary and Jesus’ brothers, were his faithful companions and walked with him. Mary presents us with the perfect model of being a disciple and a close member of the family; fully open to God’s will and supporting Jesus in his ministry.

Jesus’ mission was about extending his family, making it possible for those who choose it, to be part of God’s family. The way we choose this is by being fully open to God’s will and participating in his mission.

Being brothers and sisters of Jesus also brings about its challenges as it requires a call to witness to our faith. Are we ready to share God’s love and compassion to those who need it? To the person at work who constantly annoys us? To someone who always disagrees with us?

St Francis de Sales said, “The measure of love is to love without measure”. The love present in families is immeasurable and unconditional. This is the same love that we are being invited into today.
