The Narrow Gate

– Tuesday of the 12th Week in Ordinary Time –

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” [Matthew 7:13-14]

Today’s Gospel has three powerful messages captured in less than 100 words: loving self, loving others and pursuing God.  When they are put as simply as that they do seem quite easy. How hard can it be? But the Gospel warns us, it is not that easy: “The narrow gate is a hard road that leads to life.”

These words might sound discouraging, but Christ is being honest with us: you can choose the easier path, but it will not bring you the life that God wants for you.

It’s important to remember that Jesus’ warning is spoken in the context of his Sermon of the Mount, which is like a ‘how to’ guide on living a godly life. Take some time today to read Matthew chapters 5-7, and let Jesus’ words, his encouragement soak in.

Jesus does not set us on this path and then leave us to it. At each step along the way He is with us. He is accompanying us, equipping us, gracing us and leading us towards His Father’s house. This is the path that will bring us life.
