Shedding Baggage

– Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary –

“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” [Matthew 19:29-30]

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us to re-evaluate our relationship with wealth. Just as it is difficult for a camel to pass through the narrow, night time city gate, so too it’s difficult for those attached to riches to enter God’s Kingdom. This isn’t necessarily a condemnation of wealth, but rather a call to prioritise spiritual treasures over material ones. This Gospel challenges us to examine our hearts and question where our true treasure lies.

As Catholics, we’re urged to embrace humility and detachment, shedding the excess baggage of materialism. The “eye of the needle” symbolises this humble path. We’re encouraged to let go of attachments and invite God’s grace to transform us. Despite our struggles, God’s mercy makes the impossible possible.

Jesus assures us of abundant rewards for choosing him over worldly riches. Our sacrifices lead to immeasurable blessings—deep joy, peace and a closer bond with God. These promises far outweigh any material gains.

In essence, we’re reminded that true fulfilment comes from a loving connection with God, not possessions. We’re prompted to adopt simpler, purposeful lives, trusting God’s promises as we navigate life’s challenges.

Let’s reflect on our priorities, release what hinders our journey, and walk through the narrow gate into God’s transformative love. By doing so, we embrace the richness of God’s Kingdom and show our faith, hope, and love to everyone we encounter.

+ Jesus, help me to remove all that does not lead to You. Allow me to trust in You fully. Salvation is not in my strength but Yours alone. Amen.
