Jesus uses the image of yeast to warn the disciples about the teaching of the Pharisees and the example set by Herod. But the disciples assume that Jesus is referring to the fact that they have forgotten to bring any bread on board the boat. Jesus gets frustrated that they still don’t hear his message and seem to be worried only about how they will fill their stomachs.
What is it about the actions of the Pharisees and Herod that concerns Jesus? The Pharisees focused on laws and external actions rather than what was in their hearts. The yeast of Herod was illustrated in his execution of John the Baptist. He wanted political security at any cost and rejected moral criticism.
But why would Jesus choose yeast as a symbol of the influence and attitudes of the Pharisees and Herod?
Just as a small amount of yeast mixed with flour permeates the dough and makes the loaf expand, what might seem to be a minor act or attitude of evil can spread far and wide and cause a great deal of harm.
But similarly, what we might think of as the insignificant contribution of good that we are able to make can have a big impact.
Jesus, you used the five loaves and two fish offered by the young boy to feed thousands of hungry people. Bless the time and gifts I offer in your name so that they may bring hope and comfort to those in need.
