Daily Reflections ...

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us that if we want our inner thoughts to accord with our outer actions, then a generosity of spirit that is expressed in the practical action of giving alms can bring about this harmony. Almsgiving is heralded as the antidote to hypocrisy, greed and wickedness because it requires a contrite and humble spirit.

Choosing to give alms is an exercise in detachment, a reminder that money and earthly goods are not ultimate goods to be hoarded. Such acts go beyond what is required by law and cleanse our hearts.

of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.’ (Pope Francis Homily Fourth Sunday of Lent)

Jesus, give us generous hearts that gladly see the needs of others and respond with kindness and charity. Amen.
