In this passage we are met with an invitation to remain watchful, to be ceaselessly vigilant. The parable of the watchful servant is not simply a call to an external alertness but to a deep, interior spiritual awareness. It is about the inner posture of the heart, always inclined towards God.
The Gospel makes us confront an essential question: Are we the honest servant or the dishonest one? To some, the distinction might appear clear-cut. But, on deeper introspection, the line may blur. Many of us fall into the trap of spiritual complacency, thinking that our routine acts of faith are enough. We might not be “beating our fellow servants”, but are we truly caring for our spiritual house and the community in which we live and move and have our being?
The ‘house’ Jesus speaks of is more than just a physical dwelling; it represents our very souls. And those who ‘dwell’ or ‘visit’ are not just people, but every thought, action, and intention we allow into our lives. Do we tend to these guests with love, patience, and vigilance?
The daily noise and distractions can easily pull our gaze away from the eternal and fix it upon the transient. But this scripture serves as a gentle yet firm reminder: be ever watchful. For God can grace our lives in the most unexpected moments. And like the faithful servant, we must stand ready, hearts open, to welcome Him in.
