Preparing for Jesus' return

– Thursday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time –

“Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” [Matthew 24:42-44]

In this beautiful gospel reading, Jesus wants to prepare us for his return in glory, not in fear but in immense love. We should ask the Holy Spirit to remove everything in us that is no longer concerned with the return of Christ and which does not bring us closer to Jesus. Otherwise, instead of being witnesses of his love – of his thirst to come and take us and transform us – we will be among those who are no longer waiting for Jesus; those who will not be ready when he comes (Mt 24:42-44).

Jesus wants our hope to be an eschatological hope, and our thirst for his return ought to be always increasing. May today’s gospel spur us to love Jesus more! Instead of resisting his call, let us give everything to respond to it, without reserve.

Let us ask the Virgin Mary to help us to enter into this self-emptying and this overcoming of everything around us that is not our true good, and which does not prepare us for the return of Jesus. May we have this inner freedom that comes from love, and may this love be so deep that it puts in us this very great thirst for the return of Jesus, knowing that “without him we can do nothing.”
