Awake

– Thursday 21st Week in Ordinary Time –

“Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is comings.”  [Matthew 24:42]

What does this “stay[ing] awake]” really look like? I have been blessed to be part of a Bible study group this year. Recently we spent time discussing beauty and what it means to be someone that lives their life awakened to beauty. This led us to the film ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’.

Here in this movie, the main character lives a seemingly ordinary life until he is called out on a wild adventure to seize and embrace life. The heart of this movie embraces this idea of living “awake” even in seeming monotony. The main character, Walter, awakens to the beauty and gift of his life and the lives of those around him and ventures forward in newfound hope.

There is something in this for us to relate to today’s Gospel. Today Jesus is calling us into embracing his call to fullness of life for we know not when he will come. Jesus could return in the second coming at any time. Today’s Gospel reminds us not to be too concerned about dates and times or when this could be, but rather to live lives of faith and fullness rendering us “awake” and ready. I think staying “awake” is closely linked to gratitude.

Today, God, awaken us to Your goodness and the blessings in the lives we lead.
