True Happiness

– Thursday 5th week of Easter –

I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete”  [John 15:11]

When are you truly happy? Sure, I am happy when I’m listening to my favourite song, or spending some lovely quality time with my family or happy to see the sun after 10 days of rain. But where do I find true happiness?

In today’s Gospel, we hear the words of Jesus say that when we remain in Jesus’ love, our joy will be complete. This complete joy is mentioned numerous times throughout scripture. In the psalms it is written, “In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).” And again the Gospel of John, “Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete (John 16:24). Peter says when we believe in Jesus, we will have an indescribable and glorious joy (1 Peter 1:8).

Maybe when we look back at the happiest moments of our lives, we don’t automatically give credit to God; but the truth is that all good things come from God. There is nothing in this world that will truly satisfy us. We can be happy for a moment at a time, but we will only experience true happiness when we remain in Jesus’ presence and his love. A happiness and joy we cannot get from the world. It’s through Jesus that our joy will be complete.
