Today’s Gospel reminds that us that our shared story is so much greater than the small piece we play and those parts we choose to own. The great joy and the great challenge of belonging to a church that has existed for over two thousand years is that we follow in the footsteps of great men and women who have built and shaped our church, but we also carry history that we may not have chosen for ourselves. This was true even in Jesus’ time.
This is not only the story of our faith, but of our human experience. Every generation is called to learn from the mistakes of the past and make conscience choices about how they will right previous wrongs, and do better in the future.
In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us that there is a price for sin that falls at our feet. The challenge is there for all of us not to turn a blind eye to our history, or declare ‘it wasn’t me’. The challenge is to acknowledge what we know, and with humility and compassion, own our shared history and take steps towards healing and reconciliation.
Jesus, help us to walk humbly and listen with hearts of understanding when others share their stories and their pain. May we always be your hands and feet and reveal your love and compassion to a world in great need of healing.
