Have you ever tried, or been tempted, to ‘hide in plain sight’? It’s not very easy. Although you may go undetected for a period of time, eventually you’ll be noticed.
I’m struck that today’s Gospel observes that a ‘city on a hill cannot be hidden’. Cannot. It doesn’t get to choose if it’s noticed. It doesn’t need to do much to stand out; it exists in its surroundings and passersby are likely to notice that it is there. This observation is preceded by the simple statement that we ‘are the light of the world.’ As followers of Jesus, we carry a light inside us – of hope, faith, joy – even if we don’t always feel that way.
There have been times in my life when I haven’t felt like I carried much of a light at all, yet people in my workplace or those I encounter in mundane day to day interactions will make a comment or ask a question that shows they have noticed something ‘different’ about me. In these moments, I have a choice about whether to own the reason for my light and to share something about my faith, or to deflect the remark and move on.
Today, let’s be aware of those moments where our faith impacts others even when we’re not trying to and embrace the opportunity to shine a little light in the world.
