Feeding the Five Thousand

– 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time –

“Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” (John 6:5)

I am always amazed by this miracle, which met such a practical need for the gathered people. There are Eucharistic elements that are present, but I am focused on the miracle itself and how those in the story react to the situation.

It is miraculous and obviously reveals Christ’s divinity, but it also speaks to his humanity, showcasing both His divine power and His deep care for the needs of people. It is not just food that is multiplied, but the faith of those present to trust in the Lord’s provision.

In terms of problem-solving, I’m certainly in Philip’s camp. There are practical methods to feed these people, but the cost will be exorbitant. However, Andrew, though uncertain, brings a young boy with five loaves and two fish to Jesus. This act of faith and trust becomes the catalyst for the miracle. So too does the young boy’s offering help us to see the gift of generosity. He was prepared, unlike everyone else in the crowd. He offered what little he had in faith to Jesus and it was multiplied beyond the need, leaving an abundance behind.

My prayer today is that I may be like the young boy, bringing all that I have no matter how meagre and offering it to Christ, having faith in God’s providence. Let us offer our limited resources and talents to Jesus, trusting that He can multiply them for the benefit of others.

+ Jesus, allow me to humbly offer You the little that I have to offer. Let me not be selfish, but rather encourage me to give generously that You may multiply my offerings for the good of your Kingdom. Amen.
