Invoke the Power of the Holy Spirit within Us

– Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday –

“You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.” (John 15:27)

The Solemnity of Pentecost holds a profound place in our Catholic faith, marking the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Today we honour the ongoing gift of the Holy Spirit to God’s people two millennia ago and celebrate the birth of our Church.

Happy birthday to us!

Pentecost is a day of celebration and reflection. We celebrate the gift of the Spirit, who empowered the apostles to speak in many tongues and spread the Gospel to all nations. We are invited to contemplate the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in our lives as comforter, advocate and guide leading us towards truth, holiness and action. We are called to renew our commitment to the Church’s mission, to be instruments of God’s love and messengers of the Gospel.

Today we open up our hearts yet again, to be filled by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is not just a historical event but a living reality. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you and me (Romans 8:11). How can we share this amazing and life-changing news with our friends, family, neighbours, the barista or the person sitting next to us on the train?

Today, I encourage you to choose one person in your life you know needs Jesus. Very intentionally pray for them and when you can, show them that you care for them through acts of service. One day, by God’s grace, you may be given the opportunity and courage to share your faith story and tell them about the love of God and the saving power of Jesus Christ. Do not be afraid, the Holy Spirit is with us always!
