Preach the Gospel every Single Day

– The Ascension of the Lord –

‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.’ (Mark 16:15)

The account of Jesus’ Ascension in Mark’s gospel is completely without fuss. When he was finished talking, he was taken up to heaven. No brilliant flash of light, no fanfare, no angels, he just went. But he had a few things to say before he left. ‘go out into the world and preach the gospel to all creation’. Oh, and you might see a few crazy things!

Do we take Jesus’ final words seriously? Do we feel compelled to do what he asks?

In the days of Jesus, the followers would have taken this command quite literally, and left home to spread the word. Here we are, 2000 years later, still believing, still following Jesus, so it must have worked! But do we play our part and preach the gospel to all creation?

I think we can preach the gospel every single day. By our smile, our greeting and how we treat people. By our care for the planet. By how we give of what we have to those without. By standing with the marginalised. By speaking truth when the lies have the loudest voice. By choosing to forgive, when it is easier to hold a grudge. By loving our partner. By helping those who find it difficult to do some things. By cuddling our kids.

Preaching the gospel is the last thing Jesus asked us to do. Let us think about the hundreds of ways that we can obey that command every day. Let’s look for opportunities to spread the gospel of Jesus so that in the year 3000, they are still talking about Jesus of Nazareth and his message of salvation.
