Consistency Over Intensity

– Saturday Week 24 in Ordinary Time –

“When they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.” [Luke 8:15]

I feel that in my childhood I performed this parable as a skit for a primary religion class. As I recall, the best part was being the weeds, as we got to strangle the growing seed! I find this a most comforting parable. It rewards the plodder. The consistent, reliable, flying under the radar believer who doesn’t strive to be a superstar, but has set their path and, step after step, heads towards the goal.

In these days of self-promotion, reward for performance, and over-sharing, there is not enough said in praise of the faithful follower. Consistency over intensity.

So how do we do this? We seek God daily. Spend time in prayer and look for signs of His presence in our day. Serve others. Be kind, generous and forgiving. Love one another. It isn’t rocket science, but it isn’t easy. It is an hour to hour proposition, not just a day to day one.

Let us be consistent. Let us be faithful followers of Jesus. Let us seek to form a noble and good heart. Let us hear the word, retain it, and by persevering, be fruitful.
