Remembering With Grattitude

– Saturday Third Week of Advent –

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.” [Luke 1:5758]

The birth of John the Baptist is an occasion of great joy for Elizabeth and Zechariah, who have longed for a child for many years, to the point where it seemed nigh impossible, “For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years” (Luke 1:18). Chastised and struck dumb for his doubt at God’s promise delivered by the angel Gabriel, Zechariah is reminded of God’s goodness, which opens his heart to hope and trust.

We can cultivate a heart of gratitude by calling to mind the many blessings God has given us. In this busy Advent time, when we are preoccupied with planning holidays, shopping for Christmas gifts and preparing special family meals, take some time to write a divine thank-you list in your prayer time. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop encourages us to remember the great things God has done for us with these words, “Gratitude is the memory of the heart.”

This is especially powerful when we feel despondent or fearful, because remembering that God loves us for all eternity and has our best interests at heart gives us hope in our darkest hours. Just as Elizabeth and Zechariah’s neighbours and relatives rejoiced with them, so too, sharing our good news stories with others extends the circle of gratitude and heightens our joy. Being grateful creates a kinder world that does not ignore pain and misery but rather offers a cry of hope for change and healing.
