Do Not Be Afraid

– Saturday Week 2 of Easter –

“They saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, ‘It is I. Do not be afraid.’ ”  [John 6:19-20]

I can only imagine what it would be like to be caught in a storm, already scared, and then seeing a figure walk on the sea towards you. Like the disciples, I think I would be terrified, not comforted by this sight.

This Gospel passage reminds us that faith is not about avoiding storms but rather about navigating through them with Jesus by our side. It challenges us to trust in him, knowing that he can calm our fears and lead us to safe shores. I think what may sometimes be missed in such situations is to recognise Jesus when He is before us and welcome Him into the stormy difficulties we find ourselves in.

Christ is the anchor of our souls, the source of our strength and the one who brings us safely to the shore. When the storm threatens to overwhelm you, recognise Jesus upon the waves and be not afraid. You will find yourself safely at the shore before you know it.

+ Jesus, help me to deepen my trust in You. I know that You are with me, even when the storm threatens to overwhelm me. Calm my fears and help me to recognise You. Amen.
