Knowing His Voice

– Monday 4th week of Easter –

“All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” ”  [John 10:8-9]

In today’s reading, Jesus re-words what He had just spoken to make better sense to the people who were failing to comprehend.  Jesus  adds the fact that “the sheep” don’t take any notice of the ‘thieves and brigands’ who try and come in to the sheepfold. The sheep seem to be familiar with the shepherd, and they recognise the voice that is to lead them.  They sense the security of that voice.

Jesus may be inviting us to today  to get to know His voice as our shepherd, to be comforted by His Word and to move further towards His voice as we navigate through the different areas of our lives. Jesus lets us know that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we should be able to differentiate and “take no notice” of any voices that seeks to lead us astray. What Jesus, the ultimate shepherd, promises is that we may have life and have it to the full.

The question is how we do we get to know His voice in our lives? Are we able to recognise that voice in our everyday madness that we call life? Do we choose to listen to that voice? Your way through the gate depends on it.
