God Wants All Of You

– Monday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” [Mark 10:17]

There are times when we can be tempted to do the maths and separate the portion we give God and others, so as to know the remains of what we keep for ourselves.

We can think things like: Just get through this last hour of work then I can go home and have an evening to myself. Just get the kids through breakfast and drop them off, then I can come home and sit down with a coffee. Just get through this Sunday mass and then I can go home and relax.

I believe what Jesus is trying to teach the man who asks what he must do to inherit eternal life, is that God isn’t just interested in a portion of your good actions, your belongings or time. But rather that God wants it all. This should be seen as a wild invitation for a beautiful union, rather than an unachievable demand. The most beautiful thing about this invitation is that God gives us the grace to do this. He wants to be with us when we are at Mass, or out of it. In the busyness of a school morning, or in the quiet of an empty home when the kettle is on.

Nothing can be ‘just ours’ because everything good comes from and belongs to God. Jesus wants us to enter the kingdom of God. For us mortals it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
