Today, we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We rejoice in the God who loves us so much, he was born in a humble stable. In doing so, God reveals that he was born in the very ordinary and is the One True light that shines in the darkness.
The gospel reading from John on this holy day includes the words, “what has come into being was life and the life was the light of the people”. (v 4) It is these words that prepare us for the Christmas story, “And the Word became flesh and lived among us.” (v 14) God’s only Son has come into this world, changing everything.
Jesus is the light who enters into history and shares our human journey. In him was revealed the grace, mercy and love of God. Through him was the life, which became the light of all people. It is this light that is with us, not just two thousand years ago but each and every day, through the joys and pains of our lives. Jesus is our light, in our hearts, in our minds, in the very core of our being.
This Christmas, we are invited to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the True light, the perfect revelation of God. Let our thoughts, actions, and example bring the light of Christ and hope to all we meet. Let us be like the shepherds, “glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.” (Luke 2:20)
Let us pray to see through all the busyness of this season and be reminded of the One who is Christmas, so we may know the deep love of God that surpasses all understanding.
