True Discipleship

– Memorial of St Cecilia –

He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” [Luke 21:3-4]

In the gospel today, Jesus draws attention to a widow who gives two small copper coins to the treasury of the Temple.  These coins were everything she had to live on.

In highlighting the widow to the disciples, Jesus show us the path to true discipleship.   This poor widow is a woman who places her whole trust in God.  She hands over her last resources and, in faith, trusts that God will use it for good.

This is not about money. Rather, Jesus is moved by the widow who gives everything of herself to God, to build God’s kingdom. The widow’s heart is full of trust and generosity and by giving all she has to live on she places herself wholly into the hands of God.  God asks the same of us, to offer everything of ourselves to God so that through us, God’s will can be done.

We are not asked to give what we don’t have and the widow also helps us know that each of us has enough gifts to share.  By giving the little that we have, God is able to transform this into much more.  What we have and what we offer can make a difference.

Today, let us pray to have a heart like the widow’s heart – one full of generosity and filled with faith in God.
