Jesus, our Good Shepherd

– Monday, Week 4 of Easter –

‘I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.’ (John 10: 9)

The metaphor of Jesus as the gate to saving one’s life, and indeed, flourishing, speaks directly to our hearts. Who of us does not aspire to a better life, a safe and secure place where all are respected, included, and loved? This new life, one’s salvation, is declared as the only path to wholeness, and, as with any devoted shepherd, Jesus promises to guide and protect those who follow him—his beloved flock that are called by name.

As we navigate through life, we may find ourselves feeling lost and uncertain of our direction. In these moments, it is helpful to pause, take a step back, and reflect on our actions and the way we are living our lives. Are we making time to listen to the voice of Jesus, our Good Shepherd? Are we allowing ourselves to be distracted by circumstances, places and people that divert us away from the Gospel of love, peace, justice and truth?

Reflection is a means to refocus our attention on Jesus and his teachings. He is the ‘narrow gate’ but the ‘sure gate’ through which his followers choose to go, not because of obligation or fear but by an appreciation of its life-giving nature, the pasture that becomes the place for renewal and hope. Moreover, we can take comfort in knowing that our Good Shepherd is always there to guide us, protect us, and lead us to eternal life in his presence.
