Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

25th Week in Ordinary Time
Monday 21st September

As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. [Matthew 9:9]

I often say that I think God is a comedian. Whenever I like to make plans or think that I have my life plans all sorted out, God flips everything around the other way. My wife likes to remind me that it is God’s plan, not mine, that we need to trust in him and that he would never throw something at us that we couldn’t handle through his grace.

It is amazing that Matthew got straight up and followed Jesus. He didn’t stop and think about what he was doing or about to do, but got up and followed Jesus as soon as he was asked. He didn’t tell Jesus to give him a few days to think about it or that he’d let him know, in case something better came along. Matthew followed Jesus, trusting in him completely. Matthew allowed Jesus to lead him and allowed himself to be transformed by Jesus.

It was Jesus who invited Matthew, without judgement, without condemnation. Jesus met Matthew, and the other tax collectors where they were at and then inspired them to be more. Jesus shows us that he has come for all people without expectation- the vulnerable, the sick, the weak and YOU, no matter where you are.

Take some time today to think about how willing you are to trust in God’s plans. Do you get up straight away and trust in Him? Are you willing to be like Jesus and meet and accept others where they are at and help them to be the best they can be?
