Giving Our Best

– Presentation of The Blessed Virgin Mary –

Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them, for all of them have contributed out of their abundance but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”  [Luke 21:3-4]

Jesus’ comment on the giving of the widow being a bigger contribution than the offerings of the rich is quite astounding as he challenges us to think deeper about our heart for giving, whether that be our wealth or use of our gifts.

The Pharisees and scribes were self-righteous and self-promoting in how and what they gave to the Temple ministry and its upkeep, wanting to be noticed for their contribution. The widow gave everything she had because her love for God compelled her to give of her best first and foremost, not just a fraction or the remainder of what she had left over.

As we strive to put God at the centre of our lives, do we give everything we have to him each day? Do we offer our “first fruits” instead of what remains after we have invested in earthly things? Are we using our gifts and wealth for the benefit of others rather than serving our own interests?

As we celebrate the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary today, let’s look to Mary as a prime example of someone who gave all she had to follow God’s will, prepared to give her best for the mission entrusted to her. Let’s ask for Our Lady’s assistance as we discern how we can give our best to God.
