Listening With Delight

– Friday Week 9 in Ordinary Time –

‘While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?   David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.’ [Mark 12:35,37]

In this passage Jesus is provoking the people to think about who he truly is.  He challenges the scribes and delights the crowd, asking questions as a way of teaching. His questions point to the truth that the Messiah is both God and man but he does this in such a way that they can come to it themselves if they are listening from the heart.

How are we listening to Jesus today? Do we bring our preconceived ideas and cling to them or do we come with open hearts? Do we hear the Word with joy and delight allowing it to change the way we think, feel and live? Are we letting Jesus challenge our ideas of who he is and thereby growing in our understanding?

Jesus, may  we come to you today with hearts that are soft and open to the gift of your truth.  May we grow in our understanding of who you are each day and receive your Word with joy and delight.  Amen.
