Pursuing Wisdom

– Friday, Week 21 in Ordinary Time –

‘Five of them were foolish and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.’  (Matthew 25:2-4)

Today’s Gospel text contrast the difference between wisdom and foolishness. God’s wisdom is a practical gift for it equips us to handle difficult situations and relationships. It helps us work smarter, not harder. The wise bridesmaids bring oil with them in case it is needed, while the foolish ones do not prepare for the likelihood that the bridegroom will be late and that they will need more oil for their lamps.

Those who have God’s wisdom will show it in the way that they live. A wise person walks in righteousness since it is not just about what you do, but who you are in Christ. ‘Happy are those who find wisdom…She is more precious than jewels…She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.’ (Proverbs 3:13,15,18) A wise teacher, friend or companion is a source of great grace for our lives, because they share truth rather than what we want to hear about ourselves.

We are encouraged to seek God’s wisdom for our lives, so that we can be wise in our dealings with others, faithful to the commitments we have made and fruitful in bringing the kingdom alive in practical ways.

‘If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to you.’ (James 1:5)

May we seek God’s wisdom in our lives and share it generously with others so that it will truly be ‘a tree of life’ for all. Amen.
