Discerning the Signs and Embracing Reconciliation

– 29th Week in Ordinary Time –

‘And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?’  [Luke 12:57]

In today’s Gospel Jesus delivers a profound message about discernment and reconciliation. He critiques the crowd for their ability to predict weather changes but their inability to grasp the spiritual and moral significance of unfolding events. This passage invites us to seek a deeper understanding of our spiritual environment, urging discernment that goes beyond physical observation.

Jesus advises individuals to judge what is right and settle disputes before they escalate, highlighting the importance of reconciliation. The severe consequences of failing to settle serve as a blunt warning, reminding us of the urgency of resolving conflicts and making peace. Daily reflection on current events and personal situations, coupled with seeking God’s wisdom, is crucial for staying spiritually vigilant and aligning with His will.

Tomorrow, Queensland holds its State General Election. The Queensland Bishops’ Election Statement advocates democracy, collaboration, and the common good amidst global challenges. As Jesus’ disciples, we are called to discern the truth and seek reconciliation. Jesus’ teachings encourage us to address internal conflicts promptly. By fostering partnerships and embracing contemporary signs, we can build a more inclusive and resilient society, grounded in God’s love and guidance.

Let us pray that all those voting will exercise wisdom and discernment and that those elected to serve in Parliament will seek to serve the common good.
