The Lost Are Found

– Most Sacred Heart of Jesus –

“…would he not leave the ninety-nine and go after the missing one till he found it?”  [Luke 15:3-7]

Have you ever been lost? My husband tells the story of how, as a 15-year-old in far North Queensland, he became lost while navigating a large orienteering course.  With a healthy dose of teen confidence, he decided he knew a shortcut that would lead him to the destination faster, so he left the group and set out on his own.  After an hour, he realised he was terribly lost.  Fear gripped him! But, in the midst of it all, he said there was one thing that gave him hope – the knowledge that someone would realise he was lost and come searching for him.  In spite of the fact that he was lost because of his own actions, they would not leave him out there alone.

We all have experiences of being ‘lost’ – lost in relationships, lost in our finances, lost in addiction, anxiety or depression.  At times, this is through no fault of our own. But if we’re honest with ourselves, more often than not, our choices and actions have lead us to where we are.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that no matter how lost we may become, nor how we got there, he is looking for you, and he will find you.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, you burn with the mercy and love of the Father. Help us to trust that you  are always searching for us. Give us the grace to call on you, the courage to wait for you and the humility to let you guide us home. Amen.
