I have found the one whom my heart loves

– Feast of St Mary Magdalene –

“Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’.”  [John 20:18]

The readings today are beautiful, taking us deep into the heart of one who responds with everything she is to the healing love and grace of Jesus.

Throughout the Gospels, the references to Mary Magdalene reveal a woman of great depth.  They describe a woman who knew unimaginable torment before Jesus set her free, a faithful disciple who followed, learned from Jesus and gave to his ministry.  When others denied him or ran in the midst of his suffering and death, Mary had the courage and compassion to remain.  Finally, she came face to face with Jesus and became the first witness to his resurrection. She is the ‘apostle to the apostles’, truly a disciple for all seasons.

How is it that Mary had the humility to be taught, the compassion to stay present in suffering, the openness to see Jesus with new eyes and the courage to be his faithful witness?  The first reading tells us how – she ‘found the one whom her heart loves’. (Song of Songs 3:4)

Today don’t miss this opportunity to find the one whom your heart loves and be open to receive the love and mercy of Jesus anew so that you too can be a disciple for all seasons.

St Mary Magdalene, pray for us.
