How hard is it for us to sacrifice little things throughout our day? What if I said you couldn’t have your morning coffee or snooze your alarm clock? First, these little sacrifices may seem okay, but we can find them challenging to put into practice. Recently, I’ve been aiming to take the time to thank God for the things He has given me to help me sacrifice the little things. Jesus has given everything for me and recognising this has made sacrificing the little things simpler.
In the Gospel, when Jesus speaks to the disciples about denying themselves and taking up their cross, Jesus challenges us to authentic discipleship and asks of total commitment to Him. To take up our cross, we need to ask ourselves what we value? Are the worldly things we’re prioritising worth anything? For what value are material things if they don’t help us gain what lasts in eternity? The Lord asks us to choose Him fully and relentlessly. So that the sacrifices of our cross create space for Jesus to enter, transform and love our hearts fully and relentlessly into holiness. I’m learning that being an authentic disciple means gladly taking up my cross and enduring the suffering. Losing all just as Jesus had, in hopes that I’ll receive the victory and the freedom that Jesus gained as well.
Today, let’s sacrifice small things to help take up the cross of another. Helping someone in need, lending ears to listen. For worldly possessions cannot brighten someone’s heart. Let us love as He did and not let our sacrifices be empty but given entirely with all that we are.
