Do You Love Me?

– Friday, Week 7 of Easter –

‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’  (John 21:17)

This beautiful passage of scripture touches me at my core.  So often when we think of Jesus’ miracles we remember the physical healings, but this is a story of a deep inner healing and miraculous transformation.

Here Jesus asks Peter not once, not twice, but three times the question, ‘Do you love me?’ Though it says that Peter was sad to be asked a third time, I wonder if it was a deep experience of letting go of the grief and shame of his betrayal. Jesus knows him, he knows everything and gives Peter the chance to affirm his love till it is louder in his heart than the words of his betrayal.  Jesus speaks over Peter the call to feed and tend to his sheep three times till that ringing call to ministry is louder in his heart than the sound of the rooster reminding him of his betrayal.  Yes, Jesus knows him, knows all he has done, knows every weakness and refuses to leave him in his despair.

What parts of our hearts need to let go of past failures in order to step fully into the call of God on our lives? How is Jesus inviting you to affirm your love and answer that call?  Let’s listen closely today as Jesus invites us to deeper healing and heart led ministry.
