Placing God’s Kingdom First

– Solemnity of St Mary of the Cross –

‘But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.’          (Matthew 6: 33)

Today, the 8th of August, we celebrate the feast day of Australia’s first Saint and the Patron Saint for the Archdiocese of Brisbane. St Mary MacKillop’s dedication to education and social justice was rooted in her unwavering faith. Founding the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, she sought to address the needs of the marginalised and the poor, particularly in remote Australian communities. Her approach was not only a response to immediate needs but a deep-seated expression of her belief that God’s kingdom is realised through acts of love and service.

“But strive first for the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Her life was a testament to Jesus’ words, embodying a deep commitment to serving others and pursuing spiritual fulfillment above worldly concerns.

Despite facing numerous challenges and opposition, including excommunication and financial struggles, St Mary of the Cross, remained steadfast in her mission. Her resilience and trust in divine providence reflect her conviction that seeking God’s kingdom involves both trusting in His guidance and committing to actions that reflect kingdom values.

St Mary prioritised spiritual and communal well-being over personal gain or comfort. Her life’s story invites us to reflect on our own priorities and to live with a similar dedication to service and righteousness. May we follow her example, placing God’s kingdom first, leading to a life of purpose and fulfillment.

St Mary MacKillop, pray for us.
